Libraries of the Future

Digital libraries are much more than easy access to literature and information, they are dwellings that expand our possibility to store books and read them in the unpredictable territory that words demand. And although the book as an object remains unbeatable, when reading on a screen, a phone or a tablet we are simply repeating one of the most beautiful human activities: enlightening our brains igniting out imaginations all-in-one space for learning, consuming, sharing, creating, and experiencing. Some libraries have 3D printers and other cutting-edge tools that makes them not just places of learning, but creation.

Another element of technology in the library, is the access and use of digital repositories and databases. For example, NALIS, a public library located in Trinidad and Tobago has a digital library which has a collection of digital resources highlighting the people, places, lifestyle, culture and events surrounding these twin islands.

Libraries have evolved into more digital repositories to enable users the ease of access to online databases or online public access catalog (OPAC).

hey sosa, I am happy to read your post. Technology continues to evolve, and as it does it is becoming more and more integrated with society, Libraries are adapting to fit with a world that is increasingly digital, As we move forward, we may begin to see libraries implement new and innovative technology that allows room for active learning spaces, virtual meeting spaces and other areas conducive to collaborative and hands-on work. Indeed, libraries have evolved into innovative hubs, more than just a building with books. In some countries, the libraries are the first place people are introduced to new technology. A recent trend, is the 3D printers being displayed in some libraries, which is relatively new.

Digital libraries are indeed a valued source of information and epitomize the idea of easy, finger-tip access to information. I recently did a project for another class that required ‘visiting’ the World Digital Library. The collection consists of over 19,000 items from 193 countries, and even has photographs depicting Caribbean history, such as a photo of the railroad map of Trinidad. Project Gutenberg is another digital library that offers access to a collection of over 60,000 free e-books. Indeed projects like these and other digital libraries are a step in the right direction.

Hello Sosa. Technology have taken over the world and libraries were no exception. Libraries have evolved in more ways than one. Particularly to accommodate persons who enjoy using libraries but do not have the time to physically visit them. Now persons are able to access scholarly information with ease. Libraries are headed in the right direction, where keeping up with technology is concerned and for that reason they will remain current. Great read.
